Survivorman Encounters Narwhals
December 10, 2008 on 10:04 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments“Survivorman” Les Stroud, travels to Baffin Island to be le
ft alone for almost a week, with very few supplies and manages to survive the beautiful yet harsh environment. During his stay he has several encounters with Narwhals.
His first encounter with Narwhals is described in his blog where on his way to be dropped off by boat they encounter a large pod of Orcas, these Orcas come quite close to his boat and they soon realize that the Orcas are after the Narwhals. Orcas are the Narwhals number one predator, next to man of course.
After being dropped off Les is left with some whale blubber which comes in quite handy throughout his stay. He, like the Inuit people of the land, eat the whale blubber and skin. The whale blubber happens to be that of a narwhal.
Les gets some great shots of Narwhals during his stay, they swim quite close to his camp site.
After four days of little food Les still is unable to catch some of the Arctic Char. Just when Les is about to give up he sees some Narwhal swimming by and wonders if they might be chasing the Arctic Char towards him and allow him easier access to the arctic fish. It does not take long before Les pulls in a fish, then another and another, each progressively larger than the last. Les brings in four Arctic Char all together which is enough to fill his stomach and have some to save for later.
While Les doesn’t come out and say it, it sure sounds like the Narwhals helped him out a time or two.
This show was a great way to get to know and understand a bit more about the harsh isolated environment in which the Narwhals live each and every day. Hope you have a chance to watch it!
Check out the Gallery below for more images from the episode.
Survivorman encounters Narwhals
December 7, 2008 on 11:06 pm | In Uncategorized | No CommentsI heard from a friend last night that narwhals were mentioned in the TV show “Survivorman”. I’ve never watched the show, but I am trying to get my hands on a copy of the epsisode. My research has shown that the series is in Season 3, and apparently the series is near the end. I believe the episode is titlted “Arctic Tundra“, while since I haven’t seen it yet, I can’t confirm that. It is the third episode of this season 3. I’ll let you know more as I find out.
Just a quick google revealed Les Stroud’s Blog, looks like this might contain some details. Too late tonight to read it in detail, perhaps tomorrow.
New Smithsonian Book on Narwhals
December 2, 2008 on 7:21 pm | In Books | 2 CommentsThere is a new book available on Amazon.com about Narwhals. I have placed a few copies on order. It seems there are five different versions:
- paperback,
- paperback with a CD,
- hardcover,
- hardcover with cd
- hardcover “micro book”
I am not sure what a micro book is, but I have ordered it just to find out. I also ordered the hardcover with the CD. There isn’t any release date identified, so I suppose I must be patient. I hope I have it by Christmas.
Narwhal Books
November 30, 2008 on 9:31 pm | In Books | 1 CommentWell, I have integrated the blog site (blog.narwhal.info) into narwhal.info fairly well I think, there’s a few things I don’t like about it, but it’ll work for now.
I setup a page on the blog about Narwhal Books. The formatting needs some work, (I’m still learning about blogging with wordpress) but I think I’ve got some good ones listed there. If you find other books that feature narwhals please post a comment about it. I do still have some more books in my queue, but haven’t put them on the page yet.
I think my next page will be something along the lines of “Narwhals on the big screen” where I’ll try to list any movies that feature Narwhals.
What to blog about
November 29, 2008 on 2:54 am | In Web Development | 4 CommentsI have lots of ideas of things to blog about.
I am continually finding new books that contain narwhals. This week I found two new childrens books that have narwhals in them.
I found a video clip on You Tube of Buddy the elf and his encounter with a narwhal. So I think a section on movies with narwhals would be fun. I recall in Atlantis the ship they leave in looks much like a narwhal, I’ll try to post a picture if I can find one. And I know that in Island at the Top of the World, they have some good arial video shots of narwhals.
as more research is done in the area of food, location and behavour of narwhals, I could blog about those items.
I could post news items that come up in the media that refer to narwhals.
And of course I thought about posting some stories about narwhals, some that I have written (or started) and others as well.
So there are lots things I could blog about, we’ll see how much I actually can get done.
Welcome to the Narwhal Blog
November 26, 2008 on 8:05 pm | In Web Development | No CommentsHere I’ll be blogging about all sorts of things, usually about Narwhals.
Today in my efforts to clean up my site from a long history of neglect (from myself) and abuse (from others), I discovered a rich supply of narwhal videos on youtube. Some of the videos were really good and some were awful. I posted a few to my site, and one even made it to my front page. It was interesting to see several where people were singing songs about narwhals, I couldn’t find any good enough to make it to my site, but it was nice to know that there are other narwhal fans out there.
